Working from Home

Maria Benita Quiacain Mendoza was a 23-year old mother of three finding herself unemployed and impoverished. She would travel twice a year from Tzununa to farms in Suchitepequez to work during the coffee harvest or do other field chores with her children in tow.

Maria Benita participated in the Program for Improved Standard of Living under the Education Component implemented by the Castillo Cordova Foundation in Tzununa. She learned to produce handicrafts designed for the tourist market in the province of Solola. Maria Benita can now work from home and no longer needs to provide migrant labor in Suchitepequez during the coffee harvest. Furthermore, one of her children has overcome malnutrition.
