School Meals Program

(Programa de Alimentacion Escolar -PAE in Spanish)

Over the course of the school year, the Program contributes to preventing acute malnutrition and increasing classroom attendance rates throughout 40 schools nationwide. The PAE has two components to promote a healthy lifestyle and improve classroom performance:

    School Breakfast

The Program provides a variety of healthy breakfast meals at 19 schools located in the provinces of Escuintla, Chiquimula, Zacapa, Santa Rosa and Solola. Breakfast is nutritious and provides between 20-30% of daily requirements for protein and carbohydrates.

Glass of Incaparina (nutrient-dense beverage mix)

The Program provides a nutritional beverage high in biological protein, vitamins and minerals to students at 21 schools in the province of Huehuetenango.

Both of these components include evaluations to monitor students´ height and weight to ensure appropriate nutritional gains. In addition, PAE provides training for parents and students at each school to increase their understanding of health, nutrition and hygiene. Similarly, PAE contributes to making improvements to basic services at the schools to improve the overall educational experience.
