Fighting against Malnutrition

Outpatient Center for Nutritional Recovery

(Centros Ambulatorios de Recuperacion Nutricional -CARN in Spanish)

The Program currently operates two CARNs –one each in the provinces of Zacapa and Solola. Each CARN works to assist the recovery of children, pregnant and nursing mothers presenting (slight or moderate) levels of acute malnutrition, thereby avoiding complications.

To this end, the Program developed several activities, including evaluations in several communities or municipalities to monitor height and weight. The Program also provides training sessions in compliance with measures that have proven effective against chronic hunger as part of the government’s One Thousand Day Window Initiative. The Program also provides participants with meal kits tailored to the patient´s age and nutritional status.
