A Scholarship Taken to the Max
Back in 2008 when Joselyn Gabriela Esquivel was just nine years old, she was awarded a scholarship to attend the Mariano and Rafael Castillo Cordova School. She was given a full scholarship to cover registration fees, tuition, books, uniforms, transportation, food, lodging and provide her with a personal stipend.
Overcome with excitement, but a little anxious about going away to school where she didn`t know anyone, Jocelyn left home in Camotan to fulfill her dream of attending one of the best schools in Guatemala. She went into Third Grade; “the pace was quick, lots of homework and tests were hard,” she remembers.
The years flew by, but she always kept her grades up. While at school, she had her First Communion and Confirmation, joined the basketball team, the drama club and the choir. She was awarded first place in the Youth Movement competition for her entry in the chemistry-biology category.
Joselyn completed highschool in 2016 with the XLI Graduating Class from the Mariano and Rafael Castillo Cordova School. She is now working toward her degree in education and education management at the Eastern San Carlos University campus. In 2019 she expects to graduate and begin teaching. She plans to work at a school in her community so that she can contribute to improving education in the region and reach out to students like herself –she wants to help others like so many who helped her.
